Sayamaike is the oldest irrigation pond built with a dam during the early 7th century A.D. The history of the pond about for 1,400 years includes many renovations for activity of irrigation. Katagiri Katsumoto who was a retainer of the Toyotomi Family, reliable governor of Settsu, Kawachi, Izumi, for Tokugawa Ieyasu made a great restoration called ‘Keicho Restoration’. Sayamaike seriously damaged by the big earthquake was revived by the restoration. Owing to the Keicho Restoration, we can use water, see the great landscape and take a rest by the shore of the pond now. In June 2009, Osaka Prefecture and Osakasayama city tstarted to cooperate Osaka prefectual Sayakaike Museum which has a theme on the history of land development and its technology and Osakasayama City Museum which has a theme on the history of the region and its culture. On the beginning of the new management we will introduce Keicho Restoration, the greatest epoch and the foundation of Sayamaike now.

This special exhibition will show you the artifacts used in such water related rituals from Yayoi Period to Nara and Heian Period. We also show you the old documents related to these rituals. Hope you will see the wishes of ancient people reflected on the water and the transition of the water related rituals reflecting political ambition.

Special Exhibition; Water Control and Management of Sayamaike in the Edo Period
-With the Opening of the Tanaka the Pond Keeper Documents-

Term; March 11, 2003 (Tue.) - May 11, 2003 (Sun.)

Place; Special Exhibition Room on the Ground Floor

Admission; Free

Contents; Documents and illustrations concerning the management of Sayamaike Pond in the Edo Period.

Introduction;

In 1608, Katsumoto Katagiri, the retainer of late ruler Hideyoshi Toyotomi, restored Sayamaike Pond. Since then, 79 villages located near the lower reaches of Nishiyoke River streaming from the pond made use of the water from it. At that time, more and more wild lands were developed as the paddy fields for rice-production near around. As it rained quite a few in this region, the water from the pond was literally 'the water of life' for the farmers in these villages. So it was a very important matter how they divided the water.
To provide the water fairly and avoid the conflicts, they established many strict rules for the management of the pond among these villages. The successive master of the Tanakas owed the responsibility for the management of the pond, so he was called 'Ikemori, the Pond Keeper'.
Here we show you the old documents and illustrations left in the Tanaka the Pond Keeper Documents concerning the water management. We hope you will understand the intimate relationship between the locals and Sayamaike Pond through our exhibition.

Opening Special Exhibition;
Civil Engineering Skills in Ancient Japan

October 2, 2001 - December 2, 2001

Presented by Osaka Prefectural Sayamaike Museum, Osakasayama City Government and Board of Education of Osakasayama City

Place; Special Exhibition Room on the ground floor

Admission; Free

Introduction;

We are apt to regard civil engineering as a hard-to-understand study filled with difficult equations and graphics. But in fact, it's a study of human experiences. We mankind have developed the civil engineering skills by learning from the various experiences of our past.
In our country, we still can see Kofun Tumuli or the banks built more than 1,300 years ago. The archaeological surveys told us that our ancestors took advantage of soil, stones and woods for building them.
Our museum is to research the history of civil engineering. So we will release our first special exhibition about Japanese ancient engineering skills mainly in Yayoi Period (the 3rd B.C. - 3rd A.D.) to Nara Era (the 8th A.D.), introducing the data given from the archaeological surveys.
Civil Engineering Skills in Ancient Japan

Concept of Exhibition;

Part I. Planning of Ancient Engineering Works

  1. Units of Length
    There are some ancient rules indicating the existence of the standards.
  2. Designs
    A copper plate from Andonyama Kofun Tumulus suggests us that there might have been a calculated design.
  3. Measuring
    How did they measure the length and the height?
  4. Engineers
    From where did they learn the skill
Part II. Archaeological Evidences Shown in Ancient Engineering Works

  1. A Port in Yayoi Period
  2. Mound of Kofun Tumulus and Iron Spades
    They used wooden tools with an iron spade for digging the earth.
  3. Use of Sandbags
    You can see the real sandbags made in Kofun Period.
  4. Engineers from Abroad and the Structures for River Control
    Much of the engineering skills might have come from the continent.
